When I was about four or five years old, my favorite thing I remember playing with was this long, pink cardboard box filled with different colored tutus and sequined dress up tops that my mom got me. I’m pretty sure that I ran around the house with either a glittery tube top or fake plastic heels on every day. Needless to say, I must still be a kid at heart because yes, here I am once again donning a big pink tulle skirt. I guess some things just stay with us forever.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, you might be like me and suddenly thinking, I have no idea what I’m going to wear for date night/GNO and it’s like, tomorrow. This year, I decided to keep things preppy, modest, and super simple– not to mention affordable. Everything in my outfit I already owned, but I included links at the bottom of the post to items online that are similar and all together cost under $50!
Fun fact. I hope that these images come across as utterly romantic and beautiful, but in all honesty, we took them in the cow field behind our house. We jumped the rusty wire fence by standing on plastic chairs, and then Jared set up the trip-pod, dodging dried up cow pies in his nice shoes. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is. We decided that this year for Valentine’s Day we would stay home and make dinner ourselves, so it was fun to go ahead and take some “cute couple in nice clothes” pictures because let’s be real, tomorrow night we’ll be inside watching a movie in comfy clothes eating our weight in pasta. Hollaaaa. I think everyone should have their own style of Valentine’s Day, and hey, it’s fun to switch it up! Back when we were dating, we did more “fancier” Valentine’s dates, but I’m all for this staying home business now. Plus, we’re taking Friday and Saturday of this week to do a little KC road trip. Expect pretty pictures of brunch and the city when I get back!
As for the outfit I assembled, this button down is literally one of my favorite shirts I own. I wear dressed up to every wedding I shoot, conferences, church, headshot sessions, and interviews, but also dress it down just tucked into a pair of jeans on a weekend. I love that it’s a little bit see-through and has detail to it, as opposed to just a plain white button down. So note to self, if you see a white button down or any plain white blouse at a good price and are trying to build a versatile wardrobe with a limited about of clothing items, something like this is a must-have. The similar item link I included below is a Forever 21 top that I’ve been eyeing– mostly because it’s only $8 right now, but it’s also one of those really you-can-wear-with-anything pieces. I think it would go great with an outfit like this.
As far as tulle skirts go, I’m kind of embarrassed to admit I have a tulle-skirt addiction. Maybe it’s the former ballet-dancer in me, but I love them. I’ve started a small collection of midi to full-length skirts in various neutral tones because honestly I think they’re a great go-to when you want to look like you really dressed up for something, when in reality, you just threw on a giant skirt, plain top, and some jewelry. I see a lot of tulle skirts during Christmas time, but I think they’re perfect for spring, too! I love how they are romantic, but you can turn them into a preppy-look very easily depending on what you pair with it. For this look, I just grabbed a pair of grey hassle earrings and my Steve Madden pink suede heels. I also think a black heel, some chunkier jewelry, and a metallic clutch would be an additional look to swap in for something edgy/chic or more night-on-the-town-looking!

I hope everyone has a sweet Valentine’s Day, whether you’re with your main squeeze or surrounded by your closest girlfriends or just taking the evening to relax with a rom-com. I feel blessed to be surrounded with so much love in my life and it is an joy to share that love with others around me. If you have some fun plans or outfit ideas for tomorrow, I’d love to hear them and share in your excitement! Keep loving life!
xoxo
Happy Valentine’s Day!
