It’s been a while since I did a natural makeup post, but over Christmas I received a few organic products that have been on my wish list for a long time, so I wanted to share them with you!
There are few things I get more excited about seeing in my stocking than organic makeup! And my mom, who knows me so well, snagged some products (shown below) that I’ve had my eye on basically all of 2018!
If you’re wondering what I got and what I’m loving so far, let’s go ahead and dig right in. If you’re totally new to this idea of organic make and have no idea where to start or why this is even worth your time, scroll down a little ways to hear my explanation!
Chocolate sun natural tanning spray
Even though I’m dark complected, I still feel pale in the winter. When I’m not my normal, tan color I just don’t feel like me. So in the winter, I spray tan… But I’m not going to lie, every time I went into the garage for Jared to spray me down (the joys of marriage Jared never knew he’d experience haha).
I felt a little guilty because I knew there was no way breathing in that stuff was good for me. One accidental nostril full of St. Tropez made my head hurt and kept me sneezing all night. And who knows what it was doing to my skin/body by having it sprayed all over me.
So this year, I was pretty dedicated to either finding a healthier alternative or just embracing my winter color. But I really wanted an alternative vs. pasty skin.
Luckily, I came across Chocolate Sun. *Chorus angels sing* Chocolate Sun actually works if you get your correct shade, doesn’t smell weird, and is totally healthy. Like, even if you accidentally ate some, you’d be fine (from what I was told.)
I first tested this brand out with their lotion, which I got for free. I was given the darkest shade (3) and gave it a shot by putting it just on my face, arms, and neck. While I did like the color, I realized that because the lotion is opaque white and blends into the skin, I couldn’t see where I had/hadn’t applied it, and there were streaks on my arms and patches on my elbows. So, yeah, the lotion wasn’t my favorite, and I also felt like I could go down a shade (2) and be a little happier.
Then I tried the spray version in 2 and yes, we had a winner. I am now able to feel tan and like myself all winter!
Beautycounter nourishing day dream
I am slowly becoming one of those Beautycounter addicts. (You’ve been warned.) You know those few friends you have who are always posting about their creams and oils and jade rollers and all that and you’re like rolling your eyes at them?
They’re not lying. This stuff is really nice.
And expensive… I’ve been using this Nourishing Day Cream since the beginning of December and I ran out two weeks ago and I’ve been refraining from spending any money just so I can buy another pump of this.
But, I do feel like it’s the nicest all-around face cream I’ve had. It’s not greasy, not oily, but still healthy. It’s light and perfect for the days I don’t wear makeup or the days that I do (doesn’t make my makeup look oily when I wear it under my makeup either.)
If your face has been looking dry, stop yourself from putting that Jergens or drugstore face cream on your pretty cheeks and see if your Beautycounter friend has a sample of this instead.
Now if I can just save up enough for the night cream too…
If you looked at those first two products thinking, “I can’t afford those, this is impossible,” then get excited about this one.
I love these little Orglamix eyeshadow pots and they are $12 a pot. I got a few new colors that are my very favorites right now, and honestly, I just wear the two colors (Sticky Toffee and Grace Hyacinth) every single day.
So really, if you wanted to start your ‘going organic with my makeup products’ journey, this would be the perfect start! You could spend $24 on two colors you know you’ll wear daily and throw all those toxic palettes that you only use like, three colors out of away and switch to this.
And honestly, these pots last me over a year. So… yeah. That’s like paying less than $2/a month, which is what you’re probably paying for new eyeshadows or those fancy palettes anyways.
I had been eye-ing this Grapefruit cheek stick by Au Naturale for so long! (Thanks, mom.) I love this color. It’s definitely a great neutral, not-too-pink blush color, but what I really love about it is that it has just a little bit of “glowy” to it.
I rarely use my highlighter stick (Elate) just because I feel like this blush does the trick.
This color has been making me feel like I still have a little bit of summer on my face. And I love, love blendable cheek sticks versus powder blush because it looks so much more natural due to its “dew-y” quality.
I hadn’t heard of this brand, but I was wanting a new lip color (I only actually have one that I use–– like I said, I have to save up for every product I want, but it’s worth it to me to only have one organic product versus 20 non-organic ones! So I’ve been sparingly using just one organic lipstick for the past three months… Until I got this one!)
And I loved it.
I have Chere which is a soft, nude-pink and Possess which is more of a grey-mauve-y pink.
It’s creamy, doesn’t dry my lips, stays on *fairly* well (not LipSense or anything but I wouldn’t want that anyways) and is sheer enough that while I can see the color it’s not super thick, but it is also kind of buildable so that I can decide if I’m going for more of a colored tint look or full on opaque lipstick sort of look.
Five stars.
Those are my favorite products for winter right now! Let me know if you end up trying something out or if this inspired you to research beginning to live a more organic lifestyle.
Speaking of organic lifestyle, here’s the part where I talk about WHY I’m choosing to go this route with my makeup routine, products, lifestyle…
Investing in safe, non-toxic, organic, natural-as-possible makeup is an investment for me; typically, if I want to purchase a product, I have to save up for it or ask for it for a birthday/Christmas present because natural makeup is obviously created with higher quality, healthy ingredients, which means they come at a higher price point.
But once again, I want to reiterate just how important it is to invest in high quality, healthy makeup products.
Many of us are using makeup products every single day, and while safer, organic products are always on the rise, I know there are many that don’t check the ingredients on their products, don’t feel like they can afford to begin to switch the natural products, or, honestly, there are some who just don’t care.
You should care! Your skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system. And while you might think makeup is just sitting *on* your skin, it is actually seeping into your skin and into your bloodstream.
Artificial colors in toners and products have been reported to increase changes of tumors (more people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the US than any other cancers combined) and dibutyl phthalate is known as a respiratory toxicant. Check some of the labels of your drugstore products–– you’ll see both of these on there, I bet.
All that to say that even if you are able to swap *one* of your usual semi-toxic products for a natural one over time (like I did), that’s still healthier and better!
My advice: Don’t take an all or nothing approach to organic makeup or a totally organic lifestyle. Start by switching just one product (like your foundation or face lotion, since those take up a lot of real estate on your face/skin) and then continue as you can financially.
As organic options become more in demand and readily available, there’s really no reason in to begin to start to live a healthier life by choosing organic makeup and body care products.
I hope this inspired you to treat your body well, take care of yourself, and enjoy the best life you can! Let me know if you use or have tried an organic product I should add to my next blog post!
